Second Grade

Welcome to Second Grade!

Our second grade C.L.A.S.S. rooms are comprised of seven sections. There are approximately 21 students in each room. Our curriculum is organized around conceptual ideas and "being there" experiences. Basic skills are connected to information in a meaningful way through a yearlong theme.

Second grade is a year of tremendous growth and maturity. Reading, writing, and math are the main concepts in our curriculum. Instruction is enriched through social studies, health, and science units. The second grade curriculum is in alignment with the Indiana Academic Standards.

In Language Arts students are exposed to many genres. A diversity of reading material teaches student reading and comprehension strategies. Students receive daily practice in word recognition skills and comprehension. These skills are also supported with independent reading, Accelerated Reader, and the Book-It program. Writing is closely connected to the reading. Teachers model the writing process and conventions. Children are encouraged to write often and to self-edit their work.

Math lessons are also based on the Indiana Academic Standards. Writing is also in integral part of each math lesson to explain the process. We strive to build a firm foundation by using manipulatives and problem solving activities.

Second grade teachers recognize the importance of a strong home/school connection. Parent involvement is encouraged in homework and skill reinforcement. It is through the collaboration that we see success.
