Welcome to Fourth Grade!
Each year parents receive a copy of the Indiana Academic Standards. The fourth grade curriculum is in alignment with these standards. Assessment is an ongoing process and information from it is used to meet the students' needs. Children are assessed in written format and classroom participation. The report card includes letter grades in all subject areas.
Language Arts standards include the skills needed to read and comprehend fiction and non-fiction work. Making predictions, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and fact and opinion are some of the major areas for focus for reading in the classroom. Writing is assessed using the Indiana writing rubric. Handwriting no longer receives a grade but is still assessed as satisfactory or needing improvement.
The focus of math included multiplication and division facts, fractions, decimals, measurement, and geometry. Problem solving is an all encompassing theme whenever we work in math. Manipulatives are still used on a regular basis.
Social Studies focuses on Indiana history and geography this year. We begin with the land and continue until current events. Projects are a large part of the social studies to help make the history and important facts come alive for the students.
Science is a combination of earth science and physical science. The development of scientific thinking is important in all areas of scientific study.
