Welcome to Second Grade!
Our second-grade team works together to empower our students to thrive as lifelong learners. The goal is to provide the best learning opportunities for all students by using the cluster model to ensure all students' needs are being met. To ensure a successful year, we provide opportunities for students, parents, and teachers to work together as one strong team.
The Second Grade year is a transitional school year. Students are in their final year of the primary setting in elementary school. We often think of second grade as a year to polish and fine-tune skills learned in Kindergarten and first grade. In Second grade, the rigor is increased to prepare students for third grade as they enter a new phase of learning. For example, in second grade, it is expected that students know basic math facts with fluency so that they can apply that knowledge to add and subtract larger numbers.
In Reading and Language Arts, we are currently using the EL Curriculum.
• This series in Language Arts focuses on phonemic awareness and phonological knowledge to help second-grade students learn to put letter sounds together and take them apart to decode unknown words.
• Our Skills Block also focuses on specific skills to meet the needs of all students at their level.
• The reading comprehension portion utilizes a close read-aloud of a mentor text to explore concepts in science and social studies while learning to read a text closely as well as other Reading and Writing Academic Standards.
We implement the Eureka math series. The focus in second grade is computation (addition and subtraction within 1,000). Other modules in the series include understanding place value, linear measurement (including metric), geometry, fractions, and telling time (analog and digital).
Second-grade teachers recognize the importance of a strong home/school connection. Parent involvement is encouraged in homework and skill reinforcement. It is through collaboration that we see success.
